Man faces 25 years in prison in asbestos disposal case

28th August 2006

A man faces up to 25 years in federal prison for dumping asbestos-containing floor tiles after demolishing a building instead of disposing of the waste under Clean Air Act guidelines.

U-S Attorney Richard B. Roper announced today that Melvin Eugene Riecke the second was convicted late yesterday for failing to comply with federal standards, for lying to a state agency and for mail fraud.

Fifty-three-year-old Riecke, of Palmer, could be fined up to $1.25 million. Sentencing is set for November 21st.

The case stems from a 2002 investigation by Dallas code inspectors, who discovered a 3-and-a-half-acre tract in an industrial. Illegal waste, including hazardous asbestos-containing floor tiles, had been dumped there.

Officials say Riecke also lied on a Texas Department of Health form.
